The Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes is the feature race of the day at Flemington this Saturday with a quality field of horses assembled for the 1600m event.
The race was previously called the Craiglea Stakes before it was changed in 2007 to be named after the great mare Makybe Diva who won a record three consecutive Melbourne Cups at Flemington in 2003, 2004, and 2005 as well as a plethora of other Group 1 races.
Past winners of this race include Humidor (2017), Shocking (2010), Northerly (2002), Jeune (1995), Zabeel (1990), Dulcify (1979), Rain Lover (1969), and Comic Court (1949).
Gatting won the race last year at a big price before running 5th in the Underwood Stakes and then 10th in the Caulfield Stakes.
2020 South Australian Derby winner Russian Camelot has opened as the favorite in the Group 1 event in early betting.
The son of Camelot is starting his spring campaign in this race and is nominated for races such as the Cox Plate, as well as the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.
Other horses in single figures include Dalasan, Perfect Jewel, Fierce Impact, and Kings Will Dream.
There is also plenty of quality black-type races taking place on the day including Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes, Group 2 Bobbie Lewis Quality, and Group 2 Danehill Stakes.
I have completed the form for the entire card at Flemington on Saturday and my full 2020 Makybe Diva Stakes Day Best Bets can be found here.
Race 1 @ 12:05PM over 2500m
Schabau returned an excellent effort when first-up at Caulfield over the 2000 meters behind Al Galayel. He was only narrowly denied in that race and he will only improve on that run. He won a Listed race over 2600 meters at this track back in March and his record here is terrific (3 wins from 4 starts).

Race 2 @ 12:35PM over 1400m
Cherry Tortoni is a quality young horse with a huge amount of potential and the gelding looks really well placed to record his fourth win from as many starts in this event. This is a handy field but he represents good value.

Race 6 @ 2:55PM over 1400m
Bumper Blast returned a very good effort when winning over 1000m at Flemington first-up before a grinding effort at Caulfield last start. That race was not run to suit on a day when no horses were making up any ground and he is much better placed here on the big course at Flemington.
